Directly-Coupled Configurations for 2" Eyepieces

The ideal way to use the MPCC for visual use with 2" eyepieces is to directly couple it to the eyepiece, via the eyepiece's 2" (48mm) filter threads. This allows the MPCC to be accurately positioned, providing the optimum spacing for top performance and taking the guesswork and error out of setting a continuously variable holder. The rigid coupling also eliminates the possibility of sag or tilt from variable holders, particularly with the largest and heaviest eyepieces. This configuration also enables the MPCC to work without needing any additional back-focus. In this configuration, the eyepiece will actually come to focus about 10mm further OUT than it does without the MPCC. Since most large Dobs are limited in their back-focus, this may be the only way to achieve coma correction with some eyepieces (short of trimming truss poles..). Dob users will also appreciate the light weight of the MPCC system, which avoids the balance problems of heavier correctors.

Here are examples of direct-coupling the MPCC to some popular wide field 2" eyepieces

For best performance, the corrector should be positioned approximately 55mm from the rear mounting face of the MPCC housing to the eyepiece's field stop (+/- 3mm for best on-axis sharpness). In order to attach and properly locate the MPCC, only 1-3 inexpensive adapters are required. We also offer a convenient spacer set, that will give you the spacers needed to fit the majority of 2" eyepieces. Please see the Spacer Tube and Adapter section, below, for a listing of available spacers.

OPTIONAL:

Configurations for 1.25" Eyepieces

To use the MPCC with 1.25" eyepieces, the only additional parts required are the T2-15 Reducer/Eyepiece Holder and one or two spacer rings. The result is a compact and lightweight coma-correcting assembly that slips completely within a

Astro-Tech Titan 20mm 70 Degree Field Super Wide Angle 1.25" Eyepiece ATT20

Review & Description

This Astro-Tech 20mm Titan is a very wide 70 degree field medium power 1.25" eyepiece at a very economical price. The calculator below will let you see just how wide the field will be with your particular scope. For example, it will give you a wide 1.23 degree field and a bright 4.4mm exit pupil at 57x with a 10" f/4.5 Dobsonian. This will give you almost five minutes to observe an object as it drifts from one side of the eyepiece's flat field to the other in such a scope. That's plenty of time for multiple observers to look at the object or for you to absorb as much detail as possible before having to reposition the scope. With short focal length refractors, the 20mm Titan is a low power, very wide field eyepiece. With the 400mm focal length Astro-Tech AT-66, for example, it provides 20x, a 3.3mm exit pupil, and a huge 3.5 degree field of view that's seven times as wide as the Moon.

While it's particularly well-suited for use with Dobsonian scopes and short focal length refractors, it can provide "picture window onto space" images with any telescope type. Even medium and long focal length telescopes provide impressive views. Use this 20mm Titan on an 8" f/10 catadioptric scope and you still get a 0.7 degree field at 100x, perfect for the Moon and globular clusters like M9, M13, and M22. The low price of this eyepiece also makes it a very affordable choice to buy in pairs for binoviewer. Its 11mm eye relief is quite reasonable for this focal length, although it can somewhat limit the field for eyeglass wearers. Since the Astro-Tech field is substantially wider to begin with than most other eyepieces in this price range, most eyeglass wearers won't find the minor vignetting to be a drawback. Those who don't wear glasses will see a huge field at only a fraction the cost of many more exotic wide field eyepiece designs.
